Satellite Camera Alignment

Project : Orbitworks

Project Overview
ALTO recently had the opportunity to work with Orbitworks to perform precision dimensional inspection of two critical aerospace test assets: a Satellite Camera Station and a Vibration Test Table. The work was completed within a single 8-hour shift, delivering verified alignment and flatness data required before the equipment could be cleared for operational use.

The Challenge
The inspection demanded tight tolerances across multiple geometric characteristics in a constrained environment. For the Satellite Camera Station, this included flatness, parallelism, and perpendicularity of mounting surfaces, along with precise camera alignment position checks. The Vibration Test Table required level and flatness verification of the slip table, individual fixture flatness and level, and the relationship of each fixture to the slip table. Compounding the technical challenge, the work was conducted in a small room with limited line-of-sight for measurement equipment, and the environment required complete detoxication procedures with full medical PPE throughout the inspection.
ALTO’s Value

ALTO’s team were deployed to capture high-accuracy measurements across all required features. Beyond standard inspection, ALTO’s application engineers adjusted and re-measured the Satellite Camera Station positions until the exact alignment specified by Orbitworks was achieved. This hands-on approach transformed the inspection from a passive verification exercise into an active alignment and commissioning support task.

Technology Used

Instrument: Leica AT500 Laser Tracker

Software: SpatialAnalyzer

Results and Benefits

All required geometric characteristics were measured and confirmed with traceable accuracy. The inspection provided Orbitworks with definitive data for both the Satellite Camera Station and Vibration Test Table, enabling informed go/no-go decisions on equipment readiness. By completing the full scope within a single working day, ALTO minimized downtime and allowed Orbitworks to proceed with downstream integration and testing activities on schedule. The precision alignment support for the camera station ensured that the system met its operational specification before usage, reducing the risk of rework or misalignment-related issues during subsequent satellite testing.
